Caramelized Red Onions and Cherry topped burgers
with Great Frogs Powatinika
This spring, I visited Door County, WI, for a girls’ weekend, which was marvelous. We chose Julie’s, a charming café, for lunch. Door County is known for cherries, and the menu featured a caramelized onion and cherry burger, which I had to try. It was delicious. This is the story of this unique burger and my attempt to replicate it, paired with Great Frogs Powatinika. Enjoy!!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
1-large Red onion, sliced
1 TBSP butter
1 TBSP olive oil
1/3 cup dried cherries or 1/2 cup, sweet pitted cherries canned or frozen, thawed. Cut in 1/2 .
2-4 Grilled Burgers of your choice, salt and pepper
Hamburger Buns. lightly toasted
Mayo
Swiss cheese, or smoke provolone, optional.
METHOD
Use 1-tbsp butter & olive oil in skillet. Slowly caramelize onions a low-medium heat. Slow and steady, stirring occasionally as not to burn.
When onions are near caramelized stage, add cherries, stirring occasionally until cherries are incorporated. see note below if using frozen or fresh cherries.
Grill your burgers, be sure to add Swiss or smoked provolone on top of your burger, if desired. Prepare buns with mayo, top burger with onion, cherry topping and enjoy!
Note: If using thawed from frozen cherries or fresh, please simmer in a separate small skillet. Add 1 teaspoon of coconut sugar, simmer until moisture is reduced and you have a light glaze.
